Masters and PhD in Dietetics or Human Nutrition

If you are from another University and do not have the normal entry requirements, it may be recommended that you complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Nutrition or Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics as an entry requirement to the Masters in Human Nutrition or Masters in Dietetics, respectively.

MSc and PhD students will be required take a research methods module (FDSC 840) to prepare them for research. The module is run with the school and will start early in the year. The output of the module is a research proposal, which will be examined.

General guidelines of the process to be followed (may be amended for individual cases).

1 Present two seminars:
    a. Literature review of the topic to be researched.
    b. Methodology for researching your topic.
2 Write and submit a research proposal.
3 Submit research proposal for ethics approval.
4 Present a budget for the research and apply for funding.
5 Plan and carry out the pilot project.
6 Plan and carry out the research project.
7 Submit draft thesis to the supervisors as a ring bound copy.
8 Present your findings to the Discipline and other interested parties.
9 Submit thesis preferably hard bound for the examiners but not in the final format.
10 Make corrections as suggested by the examiners and submit in final format to University.
11 Write and submit one article to a SAPSE accredited journal.
