Biographical sketch

Annette completed her National Diploma in Food Service Management in 1990 and registered as a Dietician in 1994.  She has gained experience since then in Community Nutrition, Food Service Management and also lectured at the Central University of the Free State.  Annette joined the Discipline of Dietetics and Human Nutrition in July 2011. She is currently teaching Community Nutrition modules to second and third year students.  She also supervises Post Diploma Students and masters students.  In 2012 she won the ADSA award for best poster presentation at the Nutrition Congress Africa 2012.  In 2013 she completed with African Nutrition Leadership Programme by the North-West University for Africa delegates.

Research Interests / Areas of Specialty

  • Annette's master’s degree looked at the effect of short-chain fatty acids on glycometabolic control in men. 

  • Annette's research interests include community nutrition with a special interest in Geophagia, Malnutrition and maternity, infant and child nutrition.  She is currently registered for her PhD entitled "To determine the effect of Geophagia on the nutritional status of women between the ages of 18 and 45 in the QwaQwa area, Free State, South Africa".

 

Research Projects

  • Geophagia practices in KwaZulu Natal, in the Umkanyakude District.    

  • Geophagia practices in the QwaQwa area in the Free State.

  • 2012 – Poster presentation at the Nutrition Congress Africa 2012.  Dietary intake and serum iron status of women practicing Geophagia in QwaQwa, South Africa. 

 

  • 2011 – Presentation at the 2nd International Congress on clays and clay minerals and 1st congress on Geophagia.  Nutritional status of women practicing Geophagia in QwaQwa, South Africa

 

  • 2008 – Presentation at the 1st International Congress on clays and clay minerals in Africa (Nutritional implications of Geophagia).

 

  • 2002 - Presentation at International Conference on Military Medicine, (The effect of short-chain fatty acids on glycometabolic control in men).
